Linshan Formation

Linshan Fm

Period:
Jurassic

Age Interval:
Lower Jurassic, (TJ97a, TJ97b)

Province:
Jiangxi

Type Locality and Naming

It was named by Zhang Zhulian, Liao Shuizhang as the “Linshan Group” in 1962. The naming section is located at Linshan Mt of Litian District, Yongxin County, Jiangxi Province.

Synonym: (林山组)

Lithology and Thickness

Lower part of its Lower member is composed of grey-white and light grey medium-, and coarse-grained feldspar-, and quartz-sandstones and fine-grained sandstones, with its base containing lenticular conglomerates; the upper part of the lower member, of yellow-green and grey-yellow argillaceous siltstones intercalated with fine-grained, violet-grey argillaceous shales, carbonaceous shales and coal seams or thin coal beds, with a thickness of about 87 m. Upper member is composed of yellow-green, grey-yellow and yellow-brown siltstones, argillaceous siltstones, silty mudstones, fine-grained sandstones and mudstones, which together with purple, grey-violet and brown-violet feldspar-, and quartz-sandstones, siltstones and mudstones constitute variegated bands, with a thickness of 510 m.

Lithology Pattern:
Siltstone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Its basal part is in an unconformable contact with the underlying upper Triassic Anyuan Fm or still older strata.

Upper contact

Regionally, the schematic strat column indicates the next younger unit as Luo'ao Fm

Regional extent

The formation is distributed mainly in the areas of Yengxiu, Yongxin, Ji’an, Nancheng, Taihe, Huaiyu Mt and North Wuyi Mt, Leping, Jingdezheng and Yudo until Anyuan. The lithology of the formation is changeable a little from place to place. As in the area of Antang District, Ji’an City, the upper part of the formation is composed of basalts, basaltic andesitic tuffs and tuffaceous sediments, yielding abundant plant fossils (it used to be named by the Regional Survey Party of Jiangxi Province as the “Antang Formation” in 1966). In the area of the Shijiabian Village of Jishui County, the formation is intercalated with blasto-tuffs, tuffaceous sediments and tuffaceous sandstones, with a thickness of about 1349 m, while in the Shilin area of Yongsiu County it only 65 m thick, and with its maximum thickness being found in the Tianxin area of Anyuan County, and reaching to 3710 m.

Fossils

It yields plant fossils as represented by Equisetites cf. lateralis, coniopteris sp., Todites cf. geoppertianus, Clathropteris sp., Ptilophyllum cf. lindstroemi, Pterophyllum decurrens, P. ptilum, Nilssonia cf. pterophylloides and Cf. Lindleycladus lanceolatus.

Age

Schematic strat column in previous "red Chinese Lexicon" had implied that the Linshan Fm spanned the Early Jurassic. Menkoushan Fm in same region is conformable on the upper Triassic Anyuan Fm, therefore for-graphic-purposes put below the Linshan Fm.
